The leave component is sometimes part of the payroll component and is used to calculate leave balances, premiums or loadings payable on leave, and to record payments in advance.

Leave recording was one of the first applications to be adapted to workflow. Because it needs an accompanying approval process, it is an ideal subject to automate. The document flow between approval levels and input to the database is faster and more efficient using workflow technology.  Leave balances are required as part of the leave approval process and can be dynamically linked from the HRIS database to the medium used to display the dates requested.  In many products, the medium is a Web browser
