ABOUT THE HR FUNCTION - B1.5 Administer Payroll

Payroll was probably the first application identified for computerization because of the need for large-volume calculations. Additional people information was almost a by-product and many HRIS products sold today started life as payroll systems. Now, a payroll product can exist as:a separate stand-alone system with basic employee information such as name, address, date of birth, etc as part of the system database; a fully integrated component within the HRIS.  In that way there is no duplication of data nor dual maintenance of systems.  Reporting is from a consolidated source and job and salary history can be integrated with job history to give a complete employee profile; or a separate bureau service to calculate pay and make payments to bank accounts. Input to these systems may be through a software package supplied by the outsourcing company and connected by dial-in modem, or hard copy time sheets may be mailed for data entry into the system
